VILPE Sense warns for risk factors for mould growth in structures

VILPE Sense is a demand-based and automatic moisture management system for constructions and it is designed to keep the structures and the insulation material dry. The system is based upon the latest IoT-technology and it dries structures when needed and warns for potential leaks. The VILPE Sense also measures the risk factors that cause mould growth and alarms when the risk for mould growth increases.

The VILPE Sense system comprises a control unit and two sensors. One sensor measures the temperate and relative humidity in the insulation layer, whilst the other measures the same of the outdoor air. The algorithm of the system uses this information to calculate the amount of humidity in the insulation, detects potential leaks and dries the insulation layer when needed.

The system also calculates a mould index for the property. The mould index indicates the amount of mould that according to data can be expected to grow on a surface.  The index is based upon a model that takes into account the conditions that promote mould growth, e.g. moisture level, temperature, building material and time, when estimating how much mould is growing on a surface. The scale for the mould index is 0–6, where zero means no mould growth at all and six very extensive growth (100 % on a surface). The mould index has been developed by University of Tampere in Finland and the Finnish research center VTT.
